Boss Raid - Horntail

Horntail is a debuff and pattern raid.

Horntail punishes players who only build damage. Bring the right artifact package, know what the debuffs do, and keep enough uptime to finish the parts without burning every revive.

Built from official Horntail update notes, Korean Horntail mechanics discussion, PumpkinIdle's Horntail guide video listing, main Discord boss-raid discussion, and current maplestoryidle.info artifact / Accuracy references.

Fast setup

Start with Scale plus debuff control, then add damage.

Horntail's Scale is the raid-specific artifact. Old Music Box is the practical second check when debuffs are still deciding the run. Once the party survives debuffs cleanly, compare Hexagon, Book, and Star Rock for faster clears.

Quick start

Do not judge Horntail from CP alone.

The fight has multiple parts, crowd-control debuffs, potion pressure, and pattern knowledge checks. If your damage looks fine but the party loses control, the fix is usually Horntail's Scale, Old Music Box, safer movement, or more survivability before pure damage.

1. Equip Scale 2. Cover debuffs 3. Stop misses 4. Add boss damage 5. Test damage artifacts

Setup

Companions are passive effects in Boss Raid.

Companion summons are disabled in standard Boss Raid. Use the companion board as equipped-effect planning. If your main already uses an exact listed sub page, replace that sub slot with a different rarity of the same effect or the next strongest bossing effect you own.

Companions

Main picks
Main companion Boss damage Night Lord Boss Monster Damage
Alt main Speed Bow Master Attack Speed
Sub companion effects
Unique Night Lord Boss Monster Damage Unique Bow Master Attack Speed Crit check F/P Mage Critical Rate Basic hits Paladin Basic Attack Damage Min roll Shadower Min Multiplier Damage Max roll Hero Max Multiplier Damage

Main and alt main are equipped choices. Sub companions show the passive effect mix; duplicate effects use Unique or Epic pages because the exact same rarity cannot be equipped twice.

Artifacts

1 Horntail's Scale 2 Old Music Box 3 Hexagon Necklace 4 Book of Ancient 5 Star Rock 6 Silver Pendant

Horntail's Scale is the raid-specific core. Old Music Box is the practical debuff fallback. Hexagon and Star Rock are better after the party is surviving; move Star Rock down if the extra damage taken creates deaths.

Mechanics

Read the fight by parts and debuffs.

Korean mechanics notes split Horntail into part groups rather than one single boss pattern. The practical goal is to keep uptime while staying ready for seduce, potion seal, darkness, curse stacks, wing summons, and platform pressure.

Summon crystal Start the fight by interacting near the crystal, then settle into the party's agreed position.
Hands Watch for seduce-like control pressure and targeted hits that can ruin movement.
Tail Poison clouds can appear around the map; keep enough space to move when the tail pattern starts.
Feet Fast stomps pressure the floor. Slower stomps can also threaten the platform above.
Heads Left, right, and center heads carry different ice, lightning, fire, breath, and curse pressure.
Wings and Dark Wyvern Wings can remove buffs, apply debuffs, and summon Dark Wyvern. Close wyvern hits can push and stack danger.

Debuffs

Scale and Music Box are recommended because these failures end runs.

Horntail's Scale increases raid damage, lowers HP potion cooldown, and clears key Horntail debuffs on a cooldown. Old Music Box can cover debuffs while Scale is unavailable, including burn pressure depending on the current pattern behavior.

Weakness Jump control can be locked, making platform and dodge checks fail.
Potion Seal HP and MP potion use can be blocked. This is one of the fastest ways to lose a stable run.
Seduce Movement and jump inputs can become random or unresponsive.
Darkness Visibility loss makes danger zones and party positioning harder to read.
Burn Damage over time pressure. Current public discussion still treats exact behavior as worth retesting.
Curse stacks Attacks and Dark Wyvern hits can build curse stacks. Death appears to reduce stacks, but exact values should not be treated as fixed yet.

Rewards

Horntail is the boss raid for earrings and necklaces.

The half-anniversary Horntail update added an earring slot and Horntail necklace rewards. Current in-game tabs show Easy, Hard, and Very Hard as the main Horntail difficulties, with harder reward tiers carrying the necklace chase.

Difficulty Unlock reference Main gear rewards Accuracy check
Easy Clear Chapter 26-10 Dea Sidus Earring 240
Hard Clear Chapter 31-15 Dea Sidus Earring 330
Very Hard Clear Chapter 36-15 Dea Sidus Earring, Horntail Necklace 420
Weekly tickets Boss Raid weekly tickets increased to 4 with the Horntail update.
Double-reward entry Public update notes describe a 2-ticket double-reward option.
Medal check Horntail Destroyer is tied to clearing Horntail Hard 5 times and gives Boss Monster Damage.

Run checklist

Use the run result to decide the next swap.

  • Debuffs cause deaths: keep Horntail's Scale and Old Music Box before adding greedier damage artifacts.
  • Potions fail or cooldowns feel too long: check whether Scale is equipped and whether the party is taking avoidable hits.
  • Misses appear: solve the Accuracy difficulty target before judging companion or artifact damage.
  • Survival is stable but time is low: compare Hexagon, Book, Star Rock, Boss Damage, Critical Damage, and Defense Penetration.
  • Rewards are the goal: prioritize the highest difficulty your party clears consistently, not the highest difficulty you can enter once.
